Benji Candelario
Benji Candelario’s soulful house/garage sound draws from his Manhattan, New York upbringing during the culturally vibrant 1970s and 1980s and captures the essence of the era. The result is the sound of a world renowned DJ, producer, remixer and musician.
Even before graduating from High School, Benji was well on the road to becoming a top DJ and producer. He landed his first job at Capital Records in the promotions department, working with artists such as MC Hammer and Grace Jones. He also met Des O’Neal a promoter for Choice FM in London, who offered him a weekly mix-show. It quickly generated huge international interest and led to a flood of guest DJ spots at world leading clubs including Ministry of Sound, Pacha and Angels of Love.
From his day’s club-hopping at legendary clubs such as Studio 54 and Paradise Garage, he has created a unique sound from his roots in dance music. Starting out editing records for Arthur Baker, Benji quickly made the art of editing his own. He has worked with Grace Jones, The Bee Gees, Evelyn King, New Order and Thomas Dolby to name a handful of stars that have enjoyed collaborations with him.
As the 1990s rolled on, Candelario quit Capital for an A&R position at AM:PM Entertainment, where he discovered and signed Crystal Waters. His passion was always in production rather than management and he left to start his own production company, 2nd Colour Entertainment. Still a DJ in hot demand, Candelario continues to enjoy working as a producer and remixer for some of the world’s biggest music stars.
