Dave Jones has had a long and varied career in the music business.
He has been present at some of the most crucial points in the evolution
of the UK dance music scene, which has ensured that whatever he
does next be it behind the decks or in the studio is sure to rip
up dance floors everywhere.
Dave first became involved in the music scene when he was working
as a roadie in the 70s. After a few years of putting sound systems
together for other people, he set up his own PA system, which provided
the sounds for gigs and parties across Manchester in the 80s.
Towards the end of that decade, as the Manchester rave scene took
off, Dave and his sound system became increasingly involved in the
dance music scene's earliest parties. Dave started out sound checking
which soon transformed into playing the warm up sets. In 1989 he
secured a residency at Manchester's Konspiracy Club. These early
gigs led to bookings accross the UK at nights such as Angels in
Burnley, Eureka in Blackpool, Roxanne's in Perth, Scotland and eventually
his first London gig at The Brain.
Dave soon immersed himself in dance culture, which was at that time
still in its Acid House phase and in 1990 he formed Dub Federation,
on which he released his first single Bionic Base. His second single
Italian Jazz was released on The Brain's Brainiac Records label,
and blasted into the dance charts on both sides of the Atlantic,
including the influential Boys Own summer 1990 charts, as well as
UK style mags such as The Face, ID and the NME.
Dave then took up a Tuesday night residency at The Brain and was
reunited with his former Manchester rival Graham Park who he warmed
up for on Wednesdays at a night called Live at the Brain. He also
had guest spots at Rage at Heaven.
In autumn 1990 he released his third Dub Federation track called
Keep on Giving. A Justin Robertson remix on Three Beat Records made
it into the dance charts of some of the UK's most prestigious music
mags such as MixMag and what was then known as Record Mirror.
Following up this success Dave left Dub Federation and moved to
London to take up a residency at Love It before turning his attention
solely to more studio-based work. During this period, while his
DJ skills lay dormant, he went to work at Livingston Studios in
North London where he honed his skills in producing progressive
house tunes and in 1995 he set up his own studio called Studio 3
recordings.
It was at this time he discovered the Goa party scene and swiftly
hooked up with Ben Wilkins to set up Goa trance and techno label
Dendrite Records. Dendrite signed a distribution deal with Flying
UK in time to catch the scene as it peaked in the mid-90s.
In 1997 Dave's studio relocated to London's Old Street into a purpose-built
building, where Disco-house purveyor Joey Negro was also based,
and he got into a more soulful groove. A new Dub Federation CD emerged
and Dave also collaborated with Pacha resident Mickey Richards on
a CD called Crosswave which features vocals from T'Pau's Carol Decker
and Sara Winton from Nightmares on Wax.
In 2001 he moved himself, his studio and Spacefunk (a party he organised
from 1998 to 2003) to Brighton. Spacefunk was first based at Propaganda
in London with residents Mickey Richards and Chris Alexander.
It was at the Miami Music Conference in Spring 2001, where many
of the people he met commented on his absence from the DJ-ing circuit,
that he decided to get back behind the decks and became the club
resident at Spacefunk, now based at the Arc night club on Brighton's
sea front.
Now with a new passion for DJ-ing, in 2001 Dave started off his
radio broadcasting with London-based underground dance music station
Life FM on Sundays between 8pm and 10pm. Having moved to Brighton
and hooking up with Mick Fuller, he was a regular at Brighton-based
dance radio station Juice FM, playing monthly live mixes at the
weekends.
In 2005 he moved back to london were he now runs Room Control Records.
In person he can be spotted spreading the deep soulful house vibe
mixing up a blend of jazz melodies, funky dance beats and ethereal
vocals at The Hill Night Club, North London (www.thehilln10.com).
The night runs fortnightly on sunday evenings with regular name
guests from around the world (see diary). His passion and enthusiasm
for DJ-ing is stronger than ever with DJ bookings at places like
The Ministry of Sound, London and Pacha, London. This has also earned
him regular slots on the Soulshyne radio show broadcasting on www.passionradio.co.uk.
