What does a twelve year old kid do when he can't get into New York's coolest clubs? In the early eighties, a boy nicknamed "ONIONZ" discovered the easiest way to get inside New York's pumping dance scene was to become a DJ. He began playing hip-hop for Queen's notorious "B-BOY CREWS" New York's famous PARK PARTIES, before moving on to spin old disco and rare groove to enthusiastic crowds in local Queen's bars and nightclubs including CAMOUFLAGE and PALLADS... Committed to pushing New York's musical limits, ONIONZ quickly won over the city's tough crowds and built a strong underground following with his fresh grooves and fat funk house sound. He became a resident at New York's ROXY, and played regular dates at the NY's most prestigious clubs including LIMELIGHT, TUNNEL, SAVE THE ROBOTS and PALLADIUM. With word of mouth spreading about ONIONZ's blistering brand of N.Y. house, he began traveling to other East Coast cities, where he worked with local DJ's to help build a flourishing dance scene. In Boston, ONIONZ teamed up with JOHN DEBO and in Washington DC with SCOTT HENRY to spread the sound of the New York underground. In 1990, ONIONZ met N.Y. legend MICRO, who made him a resident at CAFFEINE nightclub on Long Island, New York. The pair also organized the fabled 'LAY-A-WAY' two day warehouse parties, which became some of the pinnacle events in the East Coast dance scene. ONIONZ also played at Brooklyn's now legendary 'FREIGHT YARD' raves with ADAM X and FRANKIE BONES in the early nineties. With U.S. dance culture reaching fever pitch in the mid decade, ONIONZ traveled across the MIDWEST, SOUTH and WEST COAST, playing at clubs including Baltimore's FEVER, Boston's AXIS, Washington DC's BUZZ, San Francisco's NIKITA and LA's MELODIC. ONIONZ also played at many spectacular one off's including San Francisco's 'BY THE PEOPLE' and 'THE GATHERING'. Considered one of the U.S's most innovative house DJs, ONIONZ appears regularly with artists such as DERRICK CARTER, CAJMERE, DOC MARTIN, MARK FARINA and STEVE LORIA at some of the nations most banging house music events. In 1995, ONIONZ also became one of the founding members of the CHOCOLATE FACTORY. Featuring some of New York's most respected DJs including ONIONZ, JOESKI, SAMEER and FRANK RYDE, this groundbreaking collective whipped crowds into a frenzy across the U.S. with their distinctly funky rhythms and uniquely infectious grooves. The huge success of the CHOCOLATE FACTORY led promoter TOM MELLO to take the weekly club from New York's ROXY to CLUB CARBON... and then on national tour throughout North America. Ever passionate and continuing to diversify, ONIONZ formed the label ELECTRIK SOUL in 1994. His productions credits don't end there. ONIONZ also went on to produce and remix tracks for labels such as TANGO RECORDINGS, SIESTA RECORDS, NRK SOUND DIVISION, MOODY RECORDS, LOW PRESSINGS, IN THE MIX, IMPERIAL DUB, GREYHOUND RECORDINGS, and RED MELON RECORDS. ONIONZ has produced tracks with artists from DUBTRIBE to GARTH, HIPP-E MASTER D., JOESKI, TONY, DANO, DJ WHO, and E.T.I. An accomplished drummer and percussionist, ONIONZ also plays on his own tracks. As a teenager, ONIONZ broke the rules by becoming one of New York's youngest DJs. Sixteen years later, he is still breaking the rules... as one of the major contenders in the U.S. house scene and one of the most prolific players in the explosion of the East Coast sound across America. |
