GARETH SOMMERVILLE

Gareth Sommerville is widely regarded as being one of Scotland's best house djs. Having built his reputation through residencies at ground breaking Scottish nights, Including The Rhumba Club, Truth, Colours and Yip Yap in the early nineties, to his current home at world renowned real house party, Ultragroove. Over the years Gareth has become synonomous with playing quality house music and rocking the crowd.

Gareth began djing In the late eighties, playing hip hop, funk and house at much loved Edinburgh night, The Kangaroo Klub; where he quickly gained a name for himself as a tight mixer and an astute selector of records.
In 1991, Gareth was invited to become main resident at two of the most exciting nights in Edinburgh at the time (not bad for a lad barely out his teens). Firstly, Tattoo; the night that introduced Edinburgh to the idea of house music all night long, where he was the main resident for nearly two years. Secondly, the Citrus Club; which saw Gareth warming up for the likes of Terry Farley, Andy Weatherall, and Rocky & Diesel, Darren Emerson and Justin Robertson. Gareth's perfect warm up sets at the Citrus led to the infamous Rhumba Club recruiting him for a five year stint as resident.

In 1993 Gareth started his own night called Truth, a night devoted the then under exposed strains of New York house and garage - which pioneered the deep and funky American house sound in Edinburgh, laying down the musical blueprint for all real house nights that have since taken place in Scotland's capital city.
Later that year Gareth embarked on an equially influential residency, at the seminal YIP YAP:
which "ruled Saturday nights in Edinburgh" (I-D Magazine) for almost four years. No mean feat for a night powered solely on resident power and the occasional well chosen guest. Miles Hollway and Elliot Eastwick loved Yip Yap so much that (along with Kaos in Portugal) it was their favourite club in the world to guest at. New York's Roc and Kato claimed its atmosphere was on a par with Angels of Love in Naples, while Pete Heller simply rated YIP YAP as his favourite small club in the UK.

The phenomenal success of YIP YAP enhanced Gareth's already burgeoning reputation in Scotland, leading to residencies at Cream (Glasgow) and The Yard at the world famous Sub Club, where he played every Friday for almost two years. During this period Gareth was also monthly resident for House Nation @ Sankey's Soap in Manchester, a house night promoted by the team behind Bugged Out, and guested at frequently at Hard Times and Shindig.
In 1997 Gareth held residencies at Buddha in Glasgow, Lunar in Dundee and The Honeycomb in Edinburgh; where he was backroom anchor for two new nights, Atomic Baby and Triptonite North, which ran until the Honeycomb was sold in the autumn of 1999.
October 99 saw Gareth promoting a low-key party for mates who like him loved house music but felt their tastes weren't being catered for in Edinburgh. Ultragroove was born, and very quickly made it's mark.

Four years on and it's still packed every fortnight, and acknowleged by those in the know, as one the UK's best house nights. Boasting an enthusiastic crowd who work up a sweat to the clubs open minded music policy of jackin' Chicago boompty boomp, Afro and latin beats, deep tribal workouts, soulful vocals and classics. In other words REAL HOUSE MUSIC. Ultragroove's loyal crowd and open minded musical ethos have led to Dennis Ferrer, Terry Farley, DJ Gregory and Jon Cutler all rating Ultragroove amongst their favourite house clubs on the planet.
In April 2002 Gareth began a Sunday night residency playing club classics at Edinburgh’s Opal Lounge, the aptly named I Love Music has hosted impromptu sets from Stevie Sole, New York’s Matty Heilbronn, and one of the parties of 2003 with Norman Jay at the controls. He also found time to record a single for Junior Records under the moniker Love Piowder People which picked up palys from Terry Farley, Tedd Patterson, Eddie Amador and Hernan Cattaneo.

Over the past couple of years Gareth has combined his numerous residencies with guest spots at Faith, Indulge, Sundaysonic and All Over My Face In London, Traxx, Tronicsole and the Sub Club In Glasgow, L'America in Cardiff, Homelands (Scotland) and Bacardi Bbar @ T In The Park.
